Green Bay Correctional Institution

Tweet/Garot was chosen as the mechanical contractor to remodel 592 jail cells in the Green Bay Correctional Institution as we had the resources to cover the scope of project specifications. Our work included mechanical and plumbing upgrades to the facility.

GBCI was first opened in 1898 and most of the buildings were built by prisoners. 16” walls were constructed on each side of the mechanical chase. We cored approximately 5,300 holes throughout these larger thick walls to provide all new waste and water piping to the new combination units. Accurate measurements and layout where crucial for laying holes for coring.

592 cells were remodeled with new stainless steel combination units which included both a combined toilet and sink. The new units are equipped with wireless communications and water control devices. Each unit can be remotely monitored, and have its water shut down from the main computer in the security room. All new riser piping was prefabbed and installed onsite to meet the 16-cell turnover every three weeks.

Some challenges of this project came with the prisoners in close proximity to the work sites. All workers on site always needed an escort and tools had to be kept far away from the work area to guarantee prisoners couldn’t get their hands on them. Regular material checks were required to keep track of all materials. Nevertheless, some of our biggest challenges that Tweet/Garot has experienced during a job to date didn’t stop this project from being completed on time.
