(San Diego, CA / De Pere, WI) A strong culture of safety, innovative safety initiatives and three consecutive years of record safety numbers. Those are just a few of the reasons why Tweet/Garot, one of Wisconsin’s largest mechanical contractors, has been recognized with the Mechanical Contractors Association of America / CNA Insurance “National Safety Excellence Award.” The award, which recognizes successful safety programs and innovative safety initiatives, was presented March 15, 2022 at the MCAA’s Annual Convention in San Diego, CA.
“I am incredibly proud of our team members and their demonstrated commitment to safety,” stated Tweet/Garot CEO, Christopher Howald. “We have built a sustained culture here of caring for yourself and caring about the person next to you. Being recognized as the safest mechanical contractor in the country is a great honor – and validation that we are building our culture the right way.”
Tweet/Garot’s safety numbers in 2021 include:
• A Recordable Incident Rate (RIR) of 1.31 on nearly 1.4 million labor hours of work
• A 20% increase in reported hazard identification and near misses year over year
• A 12% increase in Safety Advocate hours year over year, which helps identify issues before they become a safety hazard or problem
Numbers alone don’t tell the full safety story, explained Bryan Zaremba, Tweet/Garot Director of Safety and Risk Management. “Each and every person who works here has to believe, has to buy into a culture of safety. Our employees are actively involved in the process and take great pride in knowing that, when we’re doing things the right way, they’re being done the safe way.”
A few of the examples of the culture of safety cited in the award nomination include:
• A safety wall of environmental graphics, which displays real time safety numbers that are updated weekly
• Creation of a company intranet site that houses all safety information that office and field crews need; and is also accessible digitally through an employee’s phone
• Customized safety audits with feedback loops are developed by and for every department
• Updated safety policies and company-wide safety training
